God’s Word: Our Perfect and Sufficient Foundation

As we finished our first meeting for the NCCBC, I read from Psalm 19:7-11. This Psalm is known for its emphasis on drawing our hearts to meditate on the riches and beauty of God’s Word. For the sake of space, I want us to meditate together on the first characteristic that describes God’s Holy Word-that “The Law of the Lord is perfect” (Psalm 19:7) Now for many of us, the first thing that comes to mind when we see this word perfect is that the Word of God is without error and has not imperfections. And all this is true. But the word means so much more.

The word for perfect in the original language points to the idea of completeness and comprehensiveness. So, to paraphrase Dr. John MacArthur, the Word of God lacks nothing and possesses everything. Furthermore, the Word of God teaches us everything God wants us to know about Himself, His redemptive plan in Christ, and how we are to grow in holiness rooted in the Gospel of Grace. But here is the hope for us, as we feed on the life giving, life changing Word of God, our souls-our inner man-will be revived, transformed, and restored.

This is what the Bible teaches us when it exclaims “The Law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul.” It is only the complete, sufficient, and perfect Word of God that has the power to save, transform and restore our souls (Heb. 4:12).  As you read this, is your heart encouraged to savor and delight in the Word of God with greater fervency and passion? Do you want to know the power of the Word of God to transform your life? Then let’s be people who build our lives on the sure, comprehensive, complete, and unshakable Word of God.

“The Law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul.”

Furthermore, as we begin this Tri State CBC, let’s be a coalition of biblical counselors who are committed, resolved, and unwavering in our devotion to use the perfect Word of God in our ministry to others for only the Word has power to change lives. Let’s be reminded that a commitment to biblical counseling starts first with a resolute commitment to the sufficiency and authority of God’s Word. So as this coalition begins its sojourn with our eyes fixed on Christ, let’s commit to stand together on the only sure foundation there isthe perfect and sufficient Word of God.
